Changes to my carry guns
Today: I’ve been carrying a gun everyday now for over 20 years. First as an armored car guard, then Marine in combat, then a Government Security contractor in Iraq and somewhere in there as a private citizen and a CHL.
I’ve learned a lot in 20 years of carrying a gun. Something work and some don’t. But not only the gear, but also the mindset of what to carry and why. Yes, I do a modular system and it works for me.
Use your mindset, threat analysis, and common sense to find what works for you and go for it!

OUTLINE:
Got My CHL in 2005
My First Carry Gun: Para P14 1911 w two 15 round Mags
- Started cutting because of weight
Overseas Trip as a Contractor in 2008-2009
- Had to get a Glock 19 and learn to use it
- Started Customizing it
- Never really liked it
Took an Armorer’s Class on the M&P Series pistols
- Saw how it was built and liked it better than the Glock
- Ordered one
- Fixed my Glock issues: Grip angel, no finger grooves, different trigger feel, backstrap, and reliability
- Started carrying it with 2 extra mags
- Then only 1 mag and flashlight and other gear
Evolution of my Backup Gun
- 2003 Iraq, my reason for carrying a backup gun
- Armored car company always carried a backup since 2001
- Start with an ankle .22
- Then found the Kel-Tec P32. Put it in my back pocket for years
- Then tried a revolver appendix, used a Taurus snub nose I had… cheap gun.
- Got a great deal on a Ruger LCR that I love and still use
- Went from appendix to pocket carry
- IT’s still the base of my EDC gun today
Mindset change
- Probably not going to be in a rolling gun fight
- More realistic about my self defense
- Things I will carry all the time
- Being without a gun and other self defense tools is stupid, but sometimes you must
- Never know when the crack head is going to try and take you out
- But do know when I’m at hirer risk of running into a bad gun fight.
- Be realistic about your carry gun and threats
