Car Alarms

Does your car have one? Do you know how it works?  Most every car comes with an Alarm or a keyless entry.  If the key fob has a panic button on it, it’s an alarm.  A car alarm and keyless entry are supper useful for your self defense.

First off, like any other tool, learn how it works.  When does it go off, how close to the car do you have to be to use it, and what buttons work what.  For example, most unlock buttons when pushed once, open just the driver door, and have to be pushed twice to open the rest of the doors.

After you figure out your alarm, start using it all the time.  As you walk up to the car and when you walk away from the car.  Here are a couple tips for using it all the time.

If you have stuff to put in the car, like groceries, unlock the doors open the door you are loading stuff through, and then relock the doors.  This keeps others from slipping in while you aren’t paying attention.  It’s rare, but it has happened, and it’s really easy to guard against.  Use this trick especially if you are loading a small child.  My Ford Escape is too smart, the alarm will not set with a door open.  If your car will do it, use it.

Once you know how far away your fob works you can use the panic button for all sorts of things.  Try the fob to see if it will work while you are in your house.  If it does, keep your keys with you and on the night stand.  If you think someone is outside hit the panic alarm.  The loud noise and flashing lights are generally enough to have anyone that is lurking about go away.  You can also use this trick when you are in a parking lot.  If you see someone around your car, hit the panic button.

The alarm also makes it super easy to make sure your car is locked all the time.  It also makes it super easy when you get to your car un-lock it, get in and then lock it again.  Just make sure you don’t set off your own alarm if you us the fob once you are inside.

Learning to use your alarm is embarrassing at first.  I set mine off about a dozen times.

Just remember your alarm isn’t a magic charm.  Most people ignore alarms these days.  You are just hoping to scare away the bad guys, make it harder for them, or at least make it uncomfortable.

Stay Safe,
