On nov 10 1775 the Second Continental Congress established the Continental Marines.  “That two battalions of Marines be raised…”  Samuel Nicholas was set as the first Commandant and set up the first recruiting station in Tun Tavern, Philadelphia (the Marines were born in a bar).
