So, what is your final word on .45acp self defense ammo? I see that Guard Dog comes in 165 grain, are you ok with that?
I haven’t tested that in .45 Guard Dog at all. In 45 ACP I’m a traditionalist and like 230 grain hollow points at over 900 F/S if possible. Federal Hydra shocks where my go to for years. In my defense 45s I’m carrying a Federal 230 grain something or a Winchester Ranger Talon, now called a Ranger T. With 45 ammo selection is important but not as much as with a 9mm. Also, I’m firing them out of a 4 or 5 inch barrel. I don’t have any small 45s. Out of shorter barrels I’ve seen a ballistics test on the Federal HST and it looked really promising. If I was carrying a short 45 it’s what I’d load it with.
Just make sure everything functions in your gun first. Then ballistic performance comes second.

The Strasbourg tests with the goats were apparently a hoax. I vaguely remember them. I want to say the author was anonymous. I do remember when I took Gunsite 250 not too long after these tests materialized the Gunsite instructors took exception with the tests, putting it mildly! They didn’t simply believe the tests and they gave good reasons why. I don’t know, maybe somehow the Strasbourg tests have gained some credibility since then. They were of mysterious origin at the time – which was also when Marshall & Sanow were writing articles pushing high-velocity, lightweight pistols bullets and it later turned out they were full of B.S. data because some manufacturers were quietly paying them to write articles advocating those bullets. Anyhow, just a ‘heads-up’ on that matter, for what it’s worth.
I don’t think the test was a hoax. I would like to hear more about it. I know that no one in the industry liked the test at the time. It was unconventional and went against most things gun people hold dear. But here is a link to the report from the test I obtained a while ago. It looks lagit. If you have any more info about it please share. I always want to learn.
