I just got back from Front Sight where I took their 4-Day Tactical Shotgun Course. It was a lot of fun and I learned a lot. This is a short review of the course and more on what I learned. Best things I learned at the class
- How to load the gun
- What the gun is capable of at distance
- Federal Flight Control is the way to go
- Bead Sights are useable to 50 yards, but take more skill and thought
- I first wanted an auto loader but then decided to keep my pump just want rifle sights on it
- move your thumb under recoil
- Finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire
- ND next to me
- NDs during malfunction drills
- Use the safety as much as you can
- Chamber Check/Mag Check all the time
Guns
- Pistol Grips are overkill
- Extended tubes become heavy fast
- But cuffs suck
- an 870 isn’t all it’s cracked up to be
- Mossberg 500s seem to be the best Safeties can be manipulated a bunch of ways
- Benelli run fast but are quirky and can be cumbersome to load and too many buttons
- Rem 1100’s you can lose a finger in
- Mossberg 930 seemed to have no problems but can only be loaded a certain way
- KSG’s are short but a problem to load, unload, and select different ammo
Gear
- Bungy crap sucks
- Side Saddles are hard to use, load and unload, Velcro sticky works great
- Pockets you have to open are a pain
- Safariland Shotshell holders are the best
- Other brands of shotshell holders
- Plus 2s are great for special loads
- Slings are almost all in the way of a shotgun, even single points, for loading
