I think the key when it comes to legality of modifications has to be whether you can defend, to a gun-ignorant crowd, why you made any modification to your gun. For example, on my XD9, there’s a component in the slide – the “striker spring guide rod” – which is made of plastic and which can break. If and when it breaks, it can jam the striker and render the gun inoperative. So I replaced that part with an aftermarket aluminum component, which I think is defensible.
Other modifications, such as disabling safety features of the gun or lightening the trigger, are harder to defend. “You mean YOU think you know better than the manufacturer what’s safe?” a sleazy lawyer will argue. Even if I could squeeze 10% more accuracy out of my gun that way, that 10% isn’t worth the risk of having the change attacked in court.
Thanks for another great podcast!
Great thought! Just remember that the lawyer will try the same thing if they find out you changed anything in the gun. Something like the plastic spring guide rod in your XD could probably have extra add by asking about price. The plastic piece is way cheaper to manufacture. When Replacing something questions of price, and who the gun was designed for may help.
