Show Pop and Naked Guns

Last weekend in Texas there was a show pop at a local gun show.  The problem that created it… naked loaded guns.

A show pop is something the guys at Sparks Firearms came up with to make a bad joke of negligent discharges that happen at gun shows.  While rare, it is something that does happen.  I’ve only been at one show in four years where there was a show pop (and for those four years I went to about 45 shows a year in Texas).

We got the name from The Other Guys movie with Mark Wahlberg and Will Farrell.  They make fun of Farrell’s character as an accounting cop and convince him that everyone has a desk pop every so often at the police station just for fun.  He actually discharges his weapon from his desk into the air.  And the name was born.  Video below…

The actual problem happened at this last show when someone put a loaded gun into a bag with nothing protecting the trigger guard.  When he reached into his bag for something else, somehow the gun “just went off” resulting in a hole in the floor.  Luckily no one was hurt.

Lesson here: Don’t put naked loaded guns places.  If you are going to leave your gun loaded off your body places, put it in a holster of some kind.  I simply use the holsters I wear.  If a gun is going loaded anyplace, it will be in a holster that protects the trigger guard.  This way nothing else can get into the trigger guard and pull the trigger and you can’t accidently access the trigger before you are ready.

Stay Safe,

Ben

Even in my bag, I keep my Gun in a holster.

In my safes, if the gun is loaded, it stays in a holster.

Which gun is loaded?  The one in the holster!

  1. I think you missed some of the point: of course for safety all guns are always loaded… but in a pinch and I need or want a loaded gun, which one of those is loaded?

  2. “Which gun is loaded? The one in the holster.”

Sorry, but no. All guns are treated as if they are loaded.
