Today: This is a Truck Talk Tuesday.  Just out of my mind and into the recorder like we were having a conversation in while traveling.

I’m talking about the Firearms Safety Rules.  The 4 handed down from Jeff Cooper himself.  Should they change?  I’ve been thinking a lot about Number 2; “Never point the weapon at anything you don’t intend to shoot.”

It’s a negative and our minds don’t always hear the “don’t” in things.  And where do you point the gun during administrative handling?

I’m thinking of changing it to “Always point the muzzle in the safest direction possible.”

What do you think?  Leave me a comment below.

  1. I’m working on it… Always. Thanks for listening and the feed back. Still working on the wording and get to try it out more this weekend at a class.

  2. I think I agree with your rule change. I pretty much always pointed the gun in the safest direction – of which I was basically subconsciously aware, while the ‘never’ rule was more in my conscious awareness. Probably that’s so for most people, I would guess. After your proposal, I am thinking the ‘never’ rule should be understood as the ideal. Sometimes it is possible; most times, unfortunately, it is not. So maybe we should become unconsciously competent at discriminating between the ‘never’ and the ‘safest’ based on circumstances and then automatically point the muzzle accordingly. If that is best, then what is the wording of that rule? “Never cover anything you are not willing or least willing to destroy” ….reehhh! …You’re the instructor, you figure it out! 🙂

    1. I’m trying to get out of “the exception proves the rule” Find a rule we can always use and don’t change it. Can be confusing when people first start out. It’s always a work in progress.
