The One Handgun Reload You Should Practice for Self Defense

The one type of reload you should be practicing for self defense.

There are many types of handgun reloads out there, but the only one you you should be working on for self defense is the emergency reload or speed reload.  Get that old magazine out and get the new magazine in as fast as possible; no retention, no fumbling, and thinking.  If you think you should reload; mag out, new mag in.  Just do it.

  1. Sorry, wasn’t knocking revolvers, my thoughts are ” different folks, different strokes” selecting a weapon, any weapon is a personal choice. How much ammo is carried, in support of that weapon is also a personal choice.

2 speed loaders, two mags, is a reasonable number. The pistol carried for self defense, isn’t there to engage, it’s their to dis engage a bad situation. Shoot, move, communicate. Emphasis , on moving if practical. Get off the X,

  2. Concur, Ben. If your in the soup, no time to re holster a 1/2 empty mag. Dump the mag, move thru the Load, re engage.
Ben, I’m still amused by the head sweep, with the weapon stationary. I’m an old school shooter, and never bought into eyes looking in a different direction as my 1911 is pointed.
My eyes, my pistol pivot together. Sweeps or not. If your jammed up, no time for funky range stuff

    1. come on guys, not everyone carries a pistol, nor should they. Revolvers are more reliable, no jams, etc. I carry a revolver and 2 speed loaders. I used to qualify with speed loaders just like the boys with the pistols. Yes, practice. I can reload in the dark, even reload a speed loader.
