Should we use verbal warning before shooting someone? Or defending ourselves by other means? Yes if at all possible, without losing a tactical advantage.  Use verbal warning as a way to not use force to defend yourself.  Self defense is a last resort for when awareness and avoidance fail.

Listen to this podcast for more information on when you should and shouldn’t use verbal warnings and how you can avoid a fight.

Home Defense

  • Give a Verbal Warning When:
    • Everyone is in the safe room
    • You have long gun
    • Police are on the way
  • Because
    • You aren’t going hunting
    • They already have free rain of the house
    • No one is totally quite, they know where you are
  • Warning
    • I have a gun
    • Police are on the way
    • If you come down here I will shoot
    • Leave Now
  • Once and Wait; then again after a minute
  • What and listen
  • When you hear noise repeat again
  • Police will hopefully Identify themselves or let you know they are there through the 911 operator

Outside/On the Road

  • If possible
  • When it doesn’t lose you the tactical advantage
  • Example; Dirtbag pulls knife while on the other side of a car from you
  • Not to Use; When someone is pointing a gun or has knife to other person, it’s probably time to shoot, not give warning
    • First Person Defender Convenience Store Robbery www.Modernselfprotection.com/Robbery
    • If you think you need to stop the attack, stop the attack
    • If the person isn’t going to hurt anyone, then let them leave with the money
    • You are not there to arrest/capture the bad guy.  You are there to protect your family, yourself, your friends, and others; in that order.
    • Even Police Officers probably shouldn’t get involved if they don’t have to
  • At Start Showing gun is a good deterrent
  • If warning or show gun call police as soon as it’s safe

During a Fight

  • The time for words has passed
  • If you are thinking about what to say then you aren’t thinking about what you are doing
  • Favorite cop episode; “stop or I’ll…” bang “shoot!”
  • Once you are done fighting or there is an opportunity then start talking again
  • Top of the UN building Baghdad 2003, my brain moves faster then my mouth and I look stupid to my Marines

Making Threats

  • Don’t do it unless you are prepared to carry out that threat
  • Bad guys deal with bad guys for a living they know if you are real or not
  • Lost street cred and then you are in trouble because what you could have verbally stopped my turn into a self defense situation
  • Example
